The US Women’s National Team’s Megan Rapinoe gave an inspiring speech at the World Cup victory parade in New York on Wednesday. Kicking off her address with a crescendoed hello to New York City, the midfielder launched into a slew of thank yous and motivational words over the course of six minutes.
Rapinoe opened by pointing out the diversity of the USWNT, throwing support to the women she plays alongside.
“I couldn’t be more proud to be a co-captain with Carli and Alex with this team,” Rapinoe said. “It’s my absolute honor to lead this team out on the field.”
Rapinoe has served as a mouthpiece for the USWNT throughout the World Cup, speaking out on issues from gender salary disparity to the team’s political leanings when it comes to being invited to the White House. Earlier this week she said in an interview that, “I’m not going to the fucking White House.”
And during her speech at the parade, Rapinoe didn’t miss an opportunity to take a jab at the current administration, saying, “There’s no other place I’d rather be… even in the Presidential race. I’m busy. I’m sorry.”
Continuing to use her platform as a source of good, Rapinoe took a moment toward the end of her speech to leave the crowd with a charge.
“We have to be better. We have to love more and talk less. We got to listen more and talk less. We got to know that this is every person’s responsibility,” she said. “Yes we play sports. Yes we play soccer. Yes we’re female athletes, but we’re so much more than that. You’re so much more than that. How do you make your community better?”
True to form though, the Golden Boot and Golden Ball recipient finished on a lighter note, thanking Mayor de Blasio and Governor Cuomo before screaming out, “New York City, you’re the motherfucking best!”
On the night before the parade, Rapinoe had even more pointed words for Donald Trump, telling Anderson Cooper: “Your message is excluding people. You’re excluding me. You’re excluding people that look like me. You’re excluding people of color. You’re excluding… Americans that maybe support you.”
Hopefully, the USWNT’s victory will continue to give her the platform to spread such powerful messages
